Im a sucker for the old silent movies, such as The cabinet of dr caligari, Nosferatu and Rashomon.
I think its great to see how much greater focus on the visualle part instead of the sound.
Not that i dont recognize the important part sound plays in movies.

Chaplin is the top, the Big Master for film makers. Many people try to do different works in the movie like directing and acting, or writing and directing, or producing and directing...and so on. But Chaplin was writer, producer, actor, music composer, choreographer, and he did it right. In 1930 during the fever for sound films, Chaplin released "City lights" that was a silent movie as usual, going against the main stream of the modern sound movies, and it was a big success.
Regards,

Default Russian constructivism

The best films on the subject (and you would only ever watch then once) are probably the Russian constructivists - Soviet montage - artists like Sergei Eisenstein who lensed such classics as Battleship Potemkin and my favourite 'Strike!" yes I have been to film school and we were forced to watch these and you know they do have a profound impact of filmmakers who must construct reality with pictures only in first year - a ring on a woman's hand and a picture of a fresh grave equal widow etc

Strike! is something I would like to watch again - that was brilliant.

Un Chein Andalou by Louis Brunel (not Salvadore Dali) is the best surrealist movie ever.

As a kid I used to watch Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin flicks quite often.

I agree. Truly a piece of art in every sense of the word. This was the first DVD I bought actually.

But:
I can't believe this discussion has gone this long without bringing up one of the greatest silent film actors ever- Douglas Fairbanks.

Theif of Bagdad

Robin Hood

The Mark Of Zorro

He really sells every character he portrays, something a silent film actor has to be good at. He is a true wonder to watch.

To be honest; Chaplin was the Bogart of the silent film era. It doesn't get better than him. If I were to describe Fairbanks it would have to be like a silent age Indiana Jones.

I've recently started to get into silent movies. Really so far it's only Charlie Chaplin clips I have watched but I am interested in seeing some more.

To be honest, silent movies are too hard to find for a lazy guy like me to earnestly seek them out. If they're well-done, I like them, same as any other kind of movie. I love a good Charlie Chaplin film.
