There is a reason it was shown on HBO. Because it is a subscription channel, it wasn't subject to any family practices review. And it was rather shocking when it started. This show helped change our ideas of what is OK on TV. Seeing the first two seasons on DVD after it had been on the air for a while would not have the same impact as seeing it at the original air times.
I don't agree that it is lewd and immoral, but by the standards of my youth (and I was a youth long, long ago), it certainly is. There are very frank sexual discussions and Samantha slept with someone new just about every week until Smith came along. When I was growing up, married couples on sitcoms either didn't have bedrooms we saw (I Love Lucy) or they always had twin beds (Ozzie & Harriet). Damn was considered to be a very, very bad word that could never be said on television. Everything sexual was implied and not explicitly discussed.
